[bali-bali] Deadly brew kills foreigners in Bali

Health officials in Bali have confirmed four foreigners have died from suspected alcohol poisoning in the past four days.

A total of 23 people are now thought to have died from drinking a popular local palm liquor known as "arak" which had been spiked with methanol to increase its potency.

The head of the forensics unit at Denpasar's Sanglah Hospital has told the ABC that four foreigners have now died from asphyxiation caused by a swelling of the lungs which is consistent with alcohol poisoning.

Two of the deaths took place on the nearby island of Lombok.

American woman Rose Johnson died in Bali yesterday following the death there of British man Alan Cole on Saturday.

On Sunday evening a 23-year-old Dutchman, Rene Puper, died in a hospital in Lombok after the lethal brew killed his Irish partner Rachel Craig a day earlier.
