The conference is focusing on the (re-)discovery of the cultural heritage of the Buleleng regency, `the other side of Bali.' The conference aims to describe, discuss and expose its artistic identity and to stimulate the revitalisation of its performing arts in particular. Key note speakers will be I Gede Dharna and I Wayan Dibia.
Conference committee: I Gusti Bagus Sudhyatmaka Sugriwa (chair), I Wayan Dibia, Henrice Vonck, Hedi Hinzler, Éric Vandal.
We still welcome contributions to the conference. Let yourself be inspired by the program below!
Undiksha, Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha Singaraja presents the first International Conference and Festival on the `Cultural Identity of Buleleng'. Both Conference and Festival take place in the Bali Taman Hotel, Lovina Beach. Highlights include a mabarung (competition) between east and west Buleleng gong kebyar orchestras, an evening featuring rare and sacred ensembles, and the presentation of contemporary and newly commissioned works. All concerts feature seniman tua (old masters). In the context of the conference, lecture-demonstrations will be given on the specific characteristics of North Balinese performing arts, and its interactions with south Bali. The conference also marks the opening of Roots of North Balinese culture, an exhibition of old photographs of parba, drawings, prasi and other works that have been preserved in Dutch libraries.
We will be happy to welcome you in Buleleng, birthplace of the revolutionary kebyar style!
TOPICS OF THE CONFERENCE
The Music and dance session focuses on a series of topics relating to the music and dance styles of Buleleng, including the presentation and participation of a number of seniman tua (old masters).
Presenters: prof. dr I Made Bandem (Kaja Kelod), prof. dr. Pande Made Sukerta SKar (gong kebyar) Éric Vandal (gong kebyar), A.A. Bulan Trisna Djelantik (legong Karangasem/Singaraja), Henrice Vonck (gender wayang Tejakula), Vaughan Hatch (old style music and dance), Paddy Sandino (gong kebyar).
North Balinese architecture and its specific characteristics will be discussed by Popo Danes (architect), among others.
Collections of North Balinese art and artefacts, as preserved in Dutch universities and museums, form the focus of this theme. The University library in Leiden contains The Van der Tuuk collection of traditional paintings and drawings, collected between 1880 and 1994, and featuring works from the famous artist I Ketut Gede, whose works are also featured in the Pleyte and W.O.J. Nieuwenkamp collections. Van der Tuuk also collected wayang figures for the Ethnographic Museum in Leiden. In his dictionary he makes references to specific figures in wayang in Buleleng, which were popular in his time. Presenter: Hedi Hinzler
A discussion and presentation of North Balinese literature and lontars as preserved in the library Gedong Kirtya, erected by I Gede Putu Djelantik and Resident Caron in 1929. Presenters: I Dewa Gede Catra, Hedi Hinzler.
The focus of another session is culture and tourism, which cannot be viewed seperately from the Balinese village and society. As a result, the tourism industry needs updated and reliable cultural information in order to attract a constant stream of visitors. The aim to compile, document, spread and implement cultural information in the tourism industry is closely linked to the overall scope of this conference. Presenter: prof. dr Sri Hastanto (professor ISI Surakarta, vice-director Kebudayaan Dept. Kebudayaan dan Pariwisata).
