Press Statement by U.S. State Department
On January 22, 2004, the Governments of the U.S. and the Kingdom of
the Saudi Arabia jointly requested that the UN 1267 Sanctions
Committee designate the Indonesian branch of Saudi-based Al-Haramain
group as a terrorist-supporting entity and to add its name to the UN's
consolidated list of entities subject to
international sanctions. This action was taken after consultation and
coordination between the U.S. and Saudi Governments.
The joint U.S. – Saudi designation requested that the Indonesian
branch of the Saudi- based Al-Haramain, also known as Yayasan
Al-Manahil, be designated and included on the list. The designation
also listed the address of Lembaga Pelayanan Pesantren dan Studi Islam
as an address for the Saudi-based Al-Haramain.
After our further review, which included consultation with the
Government of Indonesia and clarifying information provided by
officials of the Lembaga Pelayanan Pesantren dan Studi Islam, the U.S.
Government has decided to request the UN to make an appropriate
technical change and remove the address of Lembaga Pelayanan Pesantren
dan Studi Islam from the
UN's consolidated 1267 list.
The Indonesian branch of the Saudi-based Al-Haramain organization,
also known as Yayasan Al-Manahil, will remain on the UN consolidated list.
We appreciate the efforts of the Government of
Indonesia to clarify this matter, and look forward to continue working
with Indonesian officials in our ongoing common fight against terror
and the threat it poses to all of us.
Embassy Jakarta personnel, including the Ambassador, have enjoyed
cordial professional contact with Dr. Hidayat Nur Wahid over the past
several years, and hope that our cordial and respectful relations with
Dr. Nur Wahid will continue.
The originally worded designation should not in any way be construed
as an insult to the Islamic faith or to the thousands of legitimate
Islamic organizations in Indonesia. On the contrary, we continue to
reach out and work with the Indonesians to resolve mutual
misunderstandings and misperceptions and to help Indonesia achieve its
goals of a pluralistic, democratic, and prospering nation.
