Gridlock Threatens to Choke Tourism on Bali

Kuta. Bali’s all-important tourism sector is under threat as roads and facilities are lagging the increasing numbers of visitors flocking to the resort island, officials warned recently.

During last week’s visit by Vice President Boediono to the island, Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika called for greater funding for infrastructure, in particular to ease the traffic jams gripping the more popular sites around the south of the island.

“The infrastructure we currently have in place is insufficient,” he said. “Our concern is that one day Bali will cease to be a desirable destination, mainly because of the traffic jams, so resolving this problem must be a priority.”

Among Pastika’s proposals for new infrastructure are a port at Tanah Ampo in Karangasem district; a bridge linking Serangan to Tanjung Benoa; and an overpass to help ease the regular gridlock around the Dewa Ruci traffic circle, also known as Simpang Siur.

The governor warned that the island’s economic rebound following the 2002 and 2005 terrorist bombings could falter if the traffic problem was not addressed.

Bali’s current global profile is on the rise, with visitor numbers increasing by 21 percent between 2008 and 2009. It is also set to host several high-profile events, including the 2013 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit and the 2014 Miss World pageant.

“We don’t have natural resources such as oil, coal, gas or gold,” Pastika said. “All we have are our human resources, culture and natural environment, which we need to preserve. Worsening traffic jams here will reflect poorly on Indonesia, so the central government needs to step in.”

Boediono said that while he could not pledge to allocate resources to solving the problem, he would take up the issue with relevant ministers.

Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto said the traffic problem fell under the central government’s jurisdiction. He said a third of the funding to build a port at Tanah Ampo may come from Jakarta this year, while the rest could be allocated in 2011.

“The Serangan-Tanjung Benoa bridge and the Simpang Siur issue will be dealt with by my office,” Djoko said. “We’ve met with Transportation Ministry officials to discuss the problems, and the National Development Planning Agency has also promised to prioritize them, so it’s just a matter of time before we come up with something.”

He added that broader traffic issues would be eased once the bridge and the traffic circle were dealt with.
